  • Volume flow meter - reliable but detecting low flows also?

I have used the "Volumenstromgeber" (volume flow meters) sold by Technische Alternative for many years, and I am very happy with the reliability. Since there is no moving parts (apart from the liquid), there isn't anything to get clogged up or physically break (apart from the electronics, I suppose).

    That's all fine.

The disadvantage is that the flow needs to be quite high before it even starts counting. "Quite high" as in often, the flow in my systems are not triggering it. Also, to use as a simplified water meter, they won't work either.

I need both the flow rate, and the total volume that's passing. I want the reliability, but also being able to measure even low flows.

    Measurement ranges

    FTS2-32DL.............................................. ............2 to 32 l/min

    FTS4-50DL.............................................. ............4 to 50 l/min

    FTS5-85DL.............................................. ............5 to 85 l/min

    FTS9-150DL............................................. ...........9 to 150 l/min

    FTS14-240DL............................................. .......14 to 240 l/min

    Connection thread

    FTS2-32DL.............................................. .............................. 1/2“

    FTS4-50DL / FTS5-85DL.............................................. ....... 3/4“

    FTS9-150DL ...................................... plastic thread 1 1/4“

    FTS14-240DL ....................................... brass thread1 1/2“

As one can see here, the smallest sensor has a range of 2-32 liter per minute. That is quite usable, but the challenge here is that the lower the flow rate one wants to measure, the higher the fluid resistance. I am trying to keep the system at 22mm - 3/4" sizing as a minimum, wherever possible. This means the smallest sensor I can use is the FTS4-50DL with 4 to 50 l/min. I found that this sensor in reality will measure down to around 3 l/min but still, I would really like to measure any flow, just like a mains water meter does.

    Suggestions welcome.

This is the alternate I have in mind. I have used it successfully before, I am just not sure how reliable it is in the long term, compared to the FTS Huba sensors with no moving parts.

I just see another issue is the temperature range.

VGS has a limit of 90 C while FTS allows up to 125 C. Obviously the volume/flow meter needs to sit on the cold side of the system, but care must be taken that backflow, steam or other mishaps doesn't damage the flowmeter.
